The citizens of ancient Greece were free men, able to vote and own slaves. They actively participated in politics . To be considered a citizen, a man must have a son and a wife. When Solon ruled, he divided the common citizens into four classes on the basis of wealth. They are as follows.
pentasociomédimnes: the richest of all of the classes earning some 500 médimnes of incomes.
hippeis : income of 300 médimnes
zeugites : income of 200 médimnes,
thètes: poorest with an income lower than 200 médimnes.

In conclusion, being born a normal citizen granted many rights and responsibilities, but not as many as the aristocrats. They could vote and participate in the Athenian councils. However, thy were not born with the extreme wealth and influence that the aristocrats were.
