The Greek Definition of "Citizen"
The Greeks believed that adult males, not women, were considered citizens, or polities. Some Greek civilizations, like Sparta, granted women more rights than most city states. In Athens, the rival city state of Sparta, the women were always under control of a male guardian and were often married between the ages of 12 to 18. The main function of a woman was to produce male heirs for her husband's household.
