In ancient Greece, many of the physical labors required to run the city-state were preformed by slaves. Slavery in Greece was like slavery in America but with one difference, people were not normally born into slavery. People became slaves if they were prisoners of war or if their parents couldn't raise them as children and sold them as slaves. Women slaves served as nannies for the children and were in charge of cleaning the household. The male slaves would accompany their masters children to school, care for the horses and fix the occasional broken implement. Other slave jobs were teaching, making pottery or making clothes. The worst types of slave jobs were rowing on trading ships and mining silver.
Dictatorship naturally arises out of democracy, and the most aggravated form of tyranny and slavery arise from the most extreme liberty.
