Serfs
Serfs were people who owed large debts to kings or aristocrats. These people would agree to work for the lord in exchange for protection and would work on the land for the aristocrat, king or tyrant until they died. The landowner would give him money for his debt if all of his children became serfs as well. A serf could do all kinds of manual labor to pay off his debts. They could harvest crops repair the household or dig ditches. The serfs were an important part of Ancient Greece because, along with slaves, they ran a certain piece of land that supplied a large portion of income to the city-state.
